Program Benefits Earn ISBE Director of Special Education Endorsement Fast career advancement Learn from the best transformative leaders in local schools & districts Gain immediately applicable skills Complete the program in just 1 year Work on your endorsement while working full-time Rolling admissions* *Please note that this program utilizes a cohort model. Twelve students will make a cohort and a cohort is capped at 15 students. Enrollment in the program is contingent upon meeting the cohort minimum. If the minimum is not filled, the program will not be enrolling for that year. Curriculum The Director of Special Education Endorsement program provides 12 credit hours toward the 30 hours required by the Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) for the endorsement. Applicants will complete 150 hours of field experience that are embedded in the program coursework. Students must complete the Director of Special Education (180) exam before being eligible for the endorsement from ISBE after completing coursework and field experience.

Teachers holding any other endorsement, including K-12 or preK-12 endorsements, are not eligible to add the special education endorsement through this course series. The Special Education – General Curriculum online course series is designed to equip licensed elementary, middle, and high school teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the distinct learning needs of students with disabilities. This course series will provide teachers with research-based strategies to support these students in the general curriculum settings. Target knowledge and skills include: Knowledge of the historical, ethical, and legal foundations of the field of special education How to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) Knowledge of best practices in assessment and evaluation of students with disabilities How to implement instructional strategies in reading, writing, and mathematics to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities *Note: Students interested in obtaining a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction can take these courses as an area of focus.

Sue Ann's special education journey began shortly after Jacob's birth as he was born deaf with multiple health impairments. She went back to school to complete her master's degree in Special Education and my Doctorate in Educational Leadership while becoming proficient in Sign Language. More recently, Sue Ann worked with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) as part of a state needs project to improve post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. She also served as the President of the Washington Chapter of the Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT) and continues to serve on the national committee to support increased employment options for students with disabilities. Sue Ann has taught in elementary, middle, and high school settings providing specially designed instruction to students with a wide range of disabilities. Currently, Sue Ann serves as a director of the Special Services in the Mercer Island School District.
Students fulfill these requirements by: Taking 21 core semester hours in the following perspectives: theory and foundations, developmental psychology, assessments, academic and functional instruction, case management, behavior supports and community support Taking 4 hours of practicum in a mild to moderate classroom setting and a moderate to severe setting Course descriptions Admission Information
